Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup fresh turmeric root, peeled and sliced (or 1 tbsp ground turmeric)
  • 1/4 cup fresh ginger root, peeled and sliced
  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup (optional)
  • Juice of 1 lemon or lime
  • A pinch of black pepper

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, bring the water to a boil.
  2. Add sliced turmeric and ginger to the boiling water.
  3. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15–20 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  5. Strain the mixture into a glass jar or bottle.
  6. Add honey or maple syrup (if using), lemon juice, and black pepper. Stir well.
  7. Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  8. Serve chilled or warmed, shaken before use.

Notes

For stronger flavor, steep overnight in the fridge before straining. Black pepper boosts the absorption of turmeric’s active compound, curcumin.
