  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9 inch baking pan.
  2. In a bowl, sift together flour, salt, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.
  3. In a large bowl, cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add egg and mix well. Stir in molasses.
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients.
  6. Stir in hot water until smooth.
  7. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
  8. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Let cool in pan before slicing.

Notes

Delicious served warm with whipped cream or a dusting of powdered sugar. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
