Ultimate Green Bean Casserole

A rich, creamy, crunchy green bean casserole made with fresh green beans, bacon, mushrooms, and a savory homemade sauce—perfect for holidays or any comforting family meal.

  • 1 ½ pounds fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 6 strips bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1 ½ cups sliced fresh mushrooms
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 ½ cups crispy fried onions (topping)

Instructions

  1. Blanch green beans in salted boiling water for 3–4 minutes, then transfer to ice water and drain.
  2. Cook chopped bacon in a skillet until crispy; remove and reserve 2 tablespoons bacon fat.
  3. Sauté diced onion until translucent, then add mushrooms and garlic; cook until browned and fragrant.
  4. Add heavy cream, broth, soy sauce, salt, and pepper; simmer 5 minutes to thicken.
  5. Combine green beans, vegetables, and bacon in a mixing bowl; pour sauce over and stir well.
  6. Transfer mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish and top with crispy fried onions.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25–30 minutes until bubbly and golden.

Notes

For best flavor, use fresh green beans. Assemble ahead and add the fried onions just before baking to keep them crisp.
